Is it possible to improve credit before beginning to pay off debt?

Like many people, I was raised with zero financial security or education and am just barely scraping together an understanding on my own. I accrued 16k in credit card debt a while ago, then lost my job and was out of work for a few years, so it went to collections. I’m only now able to start paying it off but I wondered if I can / should be doing anything about rebuilding my credit in the meantime or it has to first be paid off.

Thanks

Very picky reader

Hi all, I’m looking for fresh meat, hope you have some good recommendations. I read everything I get my hands on (in general, not just my favorite genre here), but there are very few HR authors I love to death. I’ve been experimenting with the names that get recommended the most on here and more often than not, I don’t enjoy them, I just critique in my head nonstop, all the way through. (Like Elizabeth Hoyt lol don’t come for me.)

I’m hoping someone here has the same taste as me and can introduce me to something new. My must haves are good writing over unique storylines, witty banter (actual wit, though), and steam.

My two all-time favorites are Lisa Kleypas and Laura Kinsale. I enjoy the slightly more problematic themes when they’re available.

Thanks!

Edit: thank you so much, everyone. I got a great new list of books to try.
