Coinbase launched x402 in May 2025 and Cloudflare joined as co-founder in September 2025

The job of x402 is to use the HTTP 402 status code as a payment layer. In this sector, 100M+ transactions were processed before the end of 2025 and around 35M transactions occurred in the first Q of 2026

On the other hand, 73% of total payments processed through x402 happened via the base chain. Base alone handled 128M total transactions, while Solana handled 48M

Currently, the highest volume on x402 is coming from Virtuals ($21M), but the most genuine transactions are being done by blockrun. ai

However, x402's daily transactions have dropped 92% from peak. The reason is that most AI agents are still using API keys and subscriptions they are not doing autonomous economic decision-making
