Painter question. Did I get screwed
My husband and i hired a couple guys he met through work to paint our vaulted ceiling and living room walls. My husband works in bathroom remodeling and does alot of new build homes. The painter is a Mexican man who speaks decent broken English. my husband says has always been super nice and friendly when they see each other at jobs. We bought a new home and needed painting done. I was home alone when he came over to bid (husband was at work) and I clearly multiple times asked if they would be purchasing the paint. He said yes, because they get a discount at sherwin williams.
They show up today and fill holes in the wall, sand, lay covers etc. Then tell me they are ready to start painting. They ask for the ceiling paint, two rolls of masking tape and bucket liner for paint.
what?!?!
I told him I thought he would be providing the paint. He said no he told my husband we needed to buy paint. My husband said he never said that. He also never said that to me and I clearly asked if we needed to. I also sent this guy a couple texts asking for the paint and type of finish we wanted.
I ended up going to sherwin williams to buy the paint. It cost me about $900. So thats outside of the bid cost he gave me. We were under the impression our bid of 3,000 covered materials (bc we clearly asked if it did).
I feel like I just got screwed over and I dont want to be rude because I know there's a slight language barrier.
Lesson learned I guess. Get everything in writing.
Do painters usually show up and expect you to provide the paint? Isnt it weird they Asked me to buy more masking tape and bucket liners?! My husband doesn't show up to a job and ask the owner to.go buy him more caulk.
Wtf!
