3 years since graduating and I only have about 1.2 YOE... any advice on what i should do next?
I graduated in 2023 with a degree in computer engineering and shortly after went to work in the aerospace and defense industry working as a hardware test engineer. I actually enjoyed the work and was proud to be called an "engineer" but quickly realized i didn't like what i was producing and its affects on the world. So as soon as my 1 year obligation was up I left to work for my sister's company taking over the "tech" side of things. I've managed different tasks like setting up her customer database system, redesigning and building a new website, and configure online payments amongst other things. The business is now grossing 7 figures, but there isn't really much for me to do anymore.
I started my own company as a side project for engineering side projects. Different disciplines come together, build cool unique projects together and learn from one another. honestly that's going in a good direction but i need/want real experience in embedded systems professionally.
At this point its been 3 years since I graduated and i only have a year and some change working a notable company. Yes i have real experience on real projects but it feels I'm stuck where i am right now. not sure if its the job market or not but seems like I'm too far removed for recent grad roles and under-qualified for staff roles. I've gotten interviews at Apple companies on rare occasions but i'm not the best live coder. I do plan on going back to school with a target of fall 2027 but i need something soon so i can sustain myself through the masters program. Are there any sources for engineering mentors? any programs that would help with jobs? any helpful tips?
