Downstairs neighbor has me worried. Should I speak to my landlord about it or leave it? (UT)
I (31F) just got a new job, and now I work from home on Thursdays. I've been hearing what I thought was a cartoon downstairs.
About a month ago, I realized it's not a cartoon. My neighbor (late 40sM) is talking to himself switching back and forth between a high-pitched puppet type voice and his normal voice. I've lived here a year and we've never spoken. He actively avoids me, if he's outside when I walk out, he will run back in and wait for me to leave. Which is fine, it just adds a layer of discomfort to the overall situation.
Two weeks ago, the police came to my house at 7 AM for a welfare check, asking for "Braden." (The house is not clearly marked as two apartments) They described my neighbor's 16 y/o son.
That's when I realized I haven't seen his son in about 3 months. I told them he lives downstairs and I haven't seen him in a few months. They asked for my landlord's phone number and for permission to enter the back yard, look through the downstairs windows etc. My landlord wanted to stop by and speak with me later that day. We weren't able to line up our schedules to meet up that week, and I haven't heard anything about it since.
But the talking has turned into arguing/yelling recently? Last night he was doing this until maybe 3 AM, directly under my room. Again, it's just the one guy down there talking to himself. I would recognize his son's voice because his son is very friendly/chatty and we've spoken multiple times.
It's been unsettling to me. I also want to make sure his son is ok, but I don't want to cross any boundaries. Should I speak to my landlord about this? Am I overreacting?
