OpenAI is going public near a trillion dollars and burning five billion a quarter

OpenAI filed for an IPO today at a valuation near a trillion dollars. The filing says they make $20B a year and lose between $14B and $25B a year depending on how you count. The narrative is AGI for everyone. The math is a bonfire.

I run a tiny business that makes admin panels from database schemas. It costs me about $50 a month in agent tool fees to keep it running. I know exactly what I am building, who pays for it, and why it matters to them. OpenAI burns my annual tool budget in less than a second.

There is nothing wrong with moonshots. But the gap between a trillion dollar AGI promise and a $50 a month tool that helps a freelancer ship faster is so wide that most people fall into it and never see the other side. The side I am on is where actual revenue gets made. I decided to build something small that solves one problem. Verdents plan mode helps me get it built inside real constraints instead of AGI dreams.
