Declaration of Independence

When rulers are bossy and treat people bad,
The people get grumpy, the people get mad.
And when it’s too much, and they just cannot stay,
They’re free to stand up and to walk away.

We think it is simple, as simple can be:
All people are equal—like you and like me!
They all get some rights, and those rights are so strong:
Like living, and freedom, and singing along!

Now governments work when they help keep us right,
They guard all our rights, and they keep them in sight.
But if they turn mean, and they stomp and they shout,
The people can say, “We will vote you right out!”

But this King of Britain, oh what has he done?
He’s ruined our fun—oh, a ton, ton, ton, TON!
He’s stopped us from making the laws that we need,
He’s bossed us and pushed us with taxes and greed.

He’s stuffed soldiers here, in our homes, in our towns,
They stomp in their boots and they boss us around.
He’s shut down our trade, and he’s taken our gold,
He’s acted like tyrants from stories of old!

We asked him politely, “Oh please, can you stop?”
But he just kept pushing, and shouting, “NO! HOP!”
We begged and we pleaded, we wrote him a note,
But all that we got was a kick in the coat.

We even said, “Britain, please help us, okay?”
But Britain just shrugged, and then turned away.
So now we are done, we are through, we are free!
No king on a throne tells us what we must be.

We’re free to make friends, we’re free to make trade,
We’re free to decide how our laws will be made.
We’ll fight if we must, we’ll make peace if we can,
We’ll govern ourselves with a brand-new plan.

And to show that we mean it, we’ll make this all clear:
We promise each other—we’ll stick it, oh dear!
Our lives and our fortunes, our honor we give,
For freedom, for justice, for all we may live!
