Abiotic Factor is one of the better games I have played in recent history, and while popular, it should be more well known
I picked up Abiotic Factor on a whim after a friend recommended it and I was skeptical at first... I had never heard of it and the poly art style made me wonder how deep it could really be.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
Abiotic Factor is a survival/crafting game that feels like Subnautica combined with Half-Life. You start out as a scientist trapped in a massive research facility gone horribly wrong, and before long you're scavenging for resources, building increasingly complex equipment, uncovering hidden lore through terminals and documents, and beating hostile creatures to death with office furniture.
The game hooked me surprisingly fast. It's funny, mysterious, and constantly rewards curiosity. Every new area raises more questions than answers, and the sense of discovery kept me pushing forward for over 100 hours.
What surprises me most is how little attention it gets compared to games like Subnautica. Subnautica is a great game, but after playing both, I found Abiotic Factor had more personality, more mystery, and a stronger sense of place. It feels like a passion project overflowing with ideas rather than a game checking genre boxes.
This isn't really a review as much as a love letter to a game that completely blindsided me. It's rare for a game to make me think about it when I'm not playing, and even rarer for me to finish a 100+ hour experience and immediately wish I could erase my memory and experience it all over again.
If you enjoy survival games, crafting, exploration, environmental storytelling, or just weird science fiction worlds, give Abiotic Factor a shot. It's fantastic solo, and even better with friends.
I genuinely haven't played something this addictive in years.
