Step 2 CK Pending, Apply This Cycle Within 3 YOG or Next Cycle at 4 YOG
I have heard that many residency programs begin filtering out applicants once they are more than three years from their year of graduation (YOG).
If I apply in this year’s Match cycle, I will still be within three years of graduation. However, my Step 2 CK is still pending, and the earliest I can take it is July. If I apply next year instead, I will be four years out from graduation.
How significant is the difference between applying within 3 years versus 4 years after graduation for a non-US IMG? Do programs generally use strict automated filters for this, or can a stronger application (better Step 2 score, more USCE/research, etc.) compensate for the additional year since graduation?
I would appreciate insight from residents, attendings, or applicants who matched with a similar timeline.
