Rewilding the Sooner State

Black-footed Ferrets are important mustelids. They were extirpated due to poisoning and prairie dog declines.

Prairie Dogs are essential for many native species.

Beavers can help restore wetland ecosystems.

Alligators create holes in the ground known as \"gator holes\" which hold water, which can benefit many native amphibians, fish, and other animals during the intense heat-waves and drought that come through in the summer.

Gray Wolves are keystones species and are important for keeping deer populations in check to prevent the spread of diseases like CWD. Along with this, they reduce grazing pressure which allows for more vegetation regrowth. They also leave behind carcass scraps, which can benefit native scavengers such as bears, eagles, and ravens. They can also encourage beaver populations to create dams, which can create new wetlands.

Bighorn sheep help maintain plant diversity by grazing, which in turn benefits other native species. Their climbing abilities and movement across rugged terrain help maintain connectivity between habitat patches, which allows other native species such as elk and pronghorn move freely and access resources, such as water.

With these species being both native and in need of conservation in the state of Oklahoma, the rewilding of these species could benefit and diversify our terrain. Some species, such as the Gray Wolf, could face backlash from farmers and other residents of the state, its important to understand that they used to call our state home, and we were the ones who kicked them out. By letting them back in, we could bring rapid coyote reproduction to a halt, preventing the state from having coyote overpopulation issues like some of our neighbors.

Piebald Vicuña, Intisuyu Hunting Reserve

I found this female Piebald Vicuña on my map around 7:30 during their drink time. It stood out amongst all the other Vicuñas, but I didn't know for sure whether or not it was a piebald. I was greatly surprised to find out that they even had a piebald fur. I've got a few more trophies I plan on posting later as well.

What type of Turtle is this? [Oklahoma]

I went outside to take the trash out and I saw this turtle by my garage door! At first I thought it was a big rock, took a close look and he began to take off. Now, we are in a suburban area and there are not very many water sources nearby, and there was a big risk of him getting hit by a car (I didn't want that for him) so we scooped him up, put him in a container and had the lid slightly open so he could get air, and we made it to Lake Hefner and as soon as I tipped over the container BAM! He went dashing into that water. And they say turtles are slow! 😂😂😂
