Translator apps when interpret isn’t available

Hi!
Sometimes it’s hard to get in touch with interpreters as my hospital only has a few available

Does anyone know of any apps I can use? Just something where I can say basic things to the patient like “can I take your blood pressure”
I have the CALD assist app but seeing if there’s other options

Edit - as per my post it would be for very very basic things like “do u want a shower” or “are you hungry”. Anything more than that I would be using the hospital interpreter when they are available

Disclosing disabilities

Hi all,
has anyone disclosed their disability during their new grad?

I’m struggling with time management / time blindness to the point where I was on learning objectives. I haven’t told them I have ADHD in fear of judgement or question my ability to work because I’m .6 for medical reasons.

I also have bipolar which hasn’t affected my work thankfully but I’m doing night shift soon so I’m terrified ND could make me unwell.

I’m wondering if I should tell them because it’s been really rough recently.

Not so nice nurses…

Hi
I’m a new grad (like 2 months) on a surgical ward and yesterday was wild.
I was going to do my 4 hourly obs on my pt (been here for 2 weeks and medically stable) and I got called to do a pick up for a post op pt so thought I’d wait til I get back so I can do his obs and meds together. I told my NIC and she said yep wait til ur back and cluster care.
Anyway, I got stuck in recovery for 40 min bc my patient deteriorated and I didn’t want to go back to the ward with an unstable patient.

I got back just before handover and went to do my patients obs and meds together (40 min late for obs) and he was off the ward.
I wasn’t able to do his meds just before I left to recovery because it was a DD med and the other med is only once a day but can’t be given early.

The night shift nurse was rude about it and saying that’s too long without obs and saying his meds are late etc which I understand but her tone was so snarky and sighing

Idk just a vent, im just frustrated with myself

PM shift obs (2nd set)

Hi all
I’m a new grad and still adjusting to PM shifts.
I’m struggling with time management and was wondering what time people usually do their 2nd lot of obs for the shift? I’m on a surgical ward

I usually do 14:30 and 17:30 but is that too early for the second set because ND start at 9pm?
Our obs is minimum every 4 hours but ofc we do them more frequently if needed.

I left obs til 7pm the other week and it got to 9pm and I was still catching up with obs and meds.
I usually start meds an hour early ie 8pm meds at 7pm

More just curious on how others do it because I don’t want to fall behind

Many thanks

J loops

Hi!
I noticed a lot of cannulas on my ward are in the CF and it’s hard to flush them because of the angle

I was wondering if I can attach a j loop to make it easier?

Sincerely,
New grad nurse

If a doctor says a med is to be given TDS - would that mean every 8 hours? Or particular times

Just saw on another post that an educator told their student that TDS doesn’t equate to every 8 hours

I honestly thought it would be every 8 hours - so TDS being 3 times a day / over 24 hr period equaling 8 hours

If I had a med scheduled TDS and the med was given at 8am instead of 7am then I would wait 8 hours for the next dose

I’ve noticed doctors will say TDS but never give set times

We use EMR if that helps (VIC)
