Greetings at the counter

Simply a question, not even complaining. Are employees trained not to have any interaction other than ordering with customers at the counter?
I am always the one to say “how are you?/hows your day going?” or something similar, and most times am met with a blank stare/confusion or what comes off as a very hesitant reply.

Edit: I’ve been to 44/151 Culver’s in Wisconsin. This happens all over.
