Lateral Process Talus Fracture
Hi orthopaedics doctors, would like to get your opinion on my injury. I was at a sports training and made a rather high jump, landed on my left foot wrongly and injured my ankle. This happened on 18 April.
X-ray and MRI showed lateral process talus fracture. Was unable to weight bear for the first 4-5 days, with bruising subsiding after 1.5-2 weeks. After the 1-1.5 week mark, my ankle has not been giving me much pain problems and I have been able to weight bear and walk relatively well since then.
MRI report states:
- A transverse fracture is seen involving the lateral process of the left talus
- Fragmentation is demonstrated as well, with the bony fragments, collectively measuring 1.3cm x 0.8cm
- Prominent underlying bone marrow oedema pattern is noted, with the gap measuring approximately 0.3cm in size
I have visited 2 different doctors, and they have different approaches:
- The first doctor (visited 2 weeks post injury) suggested ORIF for the bone heal smoothly, to prevent post trauma arthritis.
- The second doctor (visited 3.5 weeks post injury) examined my ankle on 12 May, and said since there was no pain, ability to walk well, and ankle range of motion is ok, he's not inclined to perform a surgery that may only benefit my ankle marginally
Any orthopaedics here can offer their opinions? I'm afraid of future arthritis / aching of my ankle bones due to improper healing without surgery.
Thank you!!
