Training Of Supervisors

Are there any supervisors (or former) on this forum who'd be willing to write frankly about what their training entails regarding how they should manage people? Are supervisors trained to be harsh and exploit weakness? Are they trained to always expect the worst from their employees?

I'm a PTF with about 5 months in. Although this job, and the adjustment to it, is difficult, I've decided to stick around.

I'm lucky insofar as I work at a facility that is relatively well run and not completely toxic. My fellow carriers are, for the most part, incredibly supportive. Any negativity on the floor can be isolated to a few people depending on the circumstances. We also have a strong union presence. The stewards make themselves completely available for questions or simply to talk.

My impression of our supervisory staff is mixed. I'm still fairly new so I haven't been exposed to too much the pressure and micromanagement that I know is forthcoming. They generally just assign our work and try to manage the overtime. That said, the demeanor they display is sometimes unpleasant. When I approach them with questions they are sometimes indifferent or dismissive.
