How far away are tanks deployed and how do they get them there?

I have seen tanks carried on rail cars - so that means the tanks must have to be built to a certain maximum width to pass through tunnels and move safely on rail tracks?

Can tanks drive on public roads? I would think they would be so heavy at sort of 50-100 tonnes they would damage the road, and anyway far too slow and cumbersome for this to be practical way to move one even a relatively short distance say 20km. And surely they are too heavy and wide for a truck bed carrying them? Or are they carried requiring assembly on arrival?
