I’ve seen this come up a lot lately, especially from people getting close to their goal weight, so thought it might be useful to explain how this generally works in Ireland.

I work with Slimbr.com an Irish company using doctor-led support for patients using GLP-1 meds like Mounjaro, so we deal with this quite a bit.

“Will I be cut off once I go below BMI 25?”

No, not automatically anyway.

BMI is mainly used for starting treatment, not a hard rule of “you’re done now, off you go”

Once you get into a healthier range, the conversation usually shifts to:

  • how stable your weight is
  • how you’re tolerating the medication
  • whether you actually still need it

It’s a doctor / patient review, not a cliff edge.

Can you stay on it for maintenance?

Yes, for some people, staying on a lower dose or spacing it out can make sense. For others, they come off it and do fine.

There’s no single answer, which is frustrating, but also the reality.

Obesity is increasingly treated like a long-term condition, not a quick fix. So, the idea that everyone just stops at BMI 25 and goes off into the sunset… doesn’t match what happens in practice.

What if you stop… and then need it again later?

Also, very common.

If someone comes off and then struggles a few months down the line, they can come back be reassessed.

It’s not as black-and-white as:

“your BMI isn’t high enough anymore, tough luck”

Doctors look at the full picture, your history, risk factors, weight trend, etc.

Switching providers - Is it a pain?

It shouldn’t be. We make it easy!

If you’re already on treatment, we will:

  • review what you’ve been on
  • make sure it’s still appropriate
  • continue or adjust things

The main thing is that there’s a clinical review, not just a rubber-stamp repeat prescription.

What makes the difference long-term?

From what I’ve seen, it’s not just the medication.

The people who do best with us tend to have:

  • Ongoing medical oversight
  • support with food/habits alongside it
  • a plan for what happens after weight loss

Commitment & Consistency is also very important!

Final thought

The uncertainty around this stage is completely fair, it’s still relatively new medication in Ireland and people are figuring it out as they go.

If you’re unsure what to do next, it’s worth having a conversation with whoever is managing your care rather than guessing or going off bits of info online.

I am happy to answer general questions if it helps.

Kind regards,
James
