I'm looking for a book from approx 20 years ago. The two major details I remember are large black hands and arms (no body) and glowing purple insects (I think they were fireflies).

One scene I recall is a large black hand comes out of the woods and attacks a family in a car.

Set in a small town in the US.

Not aliens. There may have been an unground facility of some kind.

I'm looking for the title of a book that I read approximately 20 years ago. It was a horror/suspense type book. There are a few key details that I remember:

there were glowing purple insects, maybe fireflies, that would attack people.

There were also large black hands attached to long black arms. There was no body at the end of the arm. One scene I remember, these large black arms and hands would reach through the forest to attack a car.

I believe I remember a scene with people watching television at night but all there was was a glowing purple screen.

I believe at the end of the novel a family escaped by driving a 4x4 Epsom logging roads over a mountain.

It was not aliens. It might have been related to an underground experimental lab.

It was said in a small town.
