Advice for stronger application 3.13 GPA
Cumulative GPA is 3.13 due to major medical issues—how do I look for SUNY/local Masters programs (Literacy/Social Studies)?
I’m** **looking for some perspective on my chances for grad school. I’m finishing up my B.S. in Adolescent Ed (Social Studies) at a university in NYC and I’m aiming for a Master's in Literacy. Binghamton is my top choice, but also looking at Adelphi and Cortland.
3.13 cumulative (Took 5-years).
I had a significant academic decline in Spring 2024 due to undiagnosed health issues. I underwent two major surgeries (one for a brain condition, one for a stage IV endometriosis) Summer 2025.
Despite the surgeries, I took a full course load during student teaching this past semester and earned straight A's. I even stayed enrolled in credits immediately following my neurosurgery to stay on track.
My personal statement is very strong, I connect my passion for literacy to the fact that I actually lost the ability to articulate myself as my brain condition worsened.
My LORs are coming from my mentor and supervisor who have seen me teach and handle this recovery firsthand; they are EXTREMELY supportive.
I’ll have my NYS Initial Certification in Social Studies (7-12) by the time I start. I was also hired to work full time at my student teaching placement!
My questions:
1. Does the "3.0 minimum" totally kill my application?
2. Anything else I can do to boost my profile before the July 1st deadline?
