SPED Case Managers/Coteachers—is it worth it?
I’m a high school chemistry teacher at a small rural school in Texas and currently I teach every level (on-level, honors, AP). This workload has been killing me this year, and our administration has been thinking about opening resource science classes and assigning someone as a coteacher in science to help with the pass rates. My principal asked me if I would do it. That means that next year, I would be teaching 3 honors chemistry courses, 1 AP chemistry course, have 1 conference period, and have 3 coteaching periods in another teacher’s classroom as well as a caseload of about 10 SPED students. I don’t know about how much documentation case managers have to do but I have heard horror stories about how much extra work they do. All I know is currently I feel like I’m fighting an uphill battle with 3 preps. Any insight would be appreciated.
