Qualification help needed, Sorry advance!
Hi everyone,
Sorry for yet another qualifications question, but I’m in a bit of a tricky situation and I’m struggling to get clear guidance from City & Guilds or my old college.
I was due to finish my C&G 2357 in 2019. As far as both I and my employer understood at the time, I had completed all of the knowledge units. For various reasons, some of which were definitely down to me being young and naive, i didn’t finish the NVQ side with the evidence/opportunities my company was giving me. From what I understood, I ended the course short by one type of containment and one type of cabling out of the 7 and 7 required. My company didn’t seem to see this as a major issue at the time, and looking back, I think there was some shared responsibility there. They continued employing me, I progressed, took on more responsibility, and my pay increased to reflect that of a fully qualified electrician.
Fast forward to now and I feel like I’m starting to hit a ceiling with the company. On top of that, the business seems to be on a bit of a decline, with late payments and less work than we’ve historically had.
Because of that, I’m really keen to get fully qualified and make sure I’m in the best position possible if redundancies or quiet periods come up.
I’ve contacted a few training centres, and some have said they can take me on to complete an Experienced Worker Assessment based on my existing 2357 knowledge units, but it’s obviously going to cost a fair bit.
The issue is that on the skill scan, it’s showing that I don’t have Unit 304. From my limited understanding, and after speaking to City & Guilds, this is something that would likely have been completed in the first year. It also seems very unlikely that I would have been allowed to get right to the end of the course without this being flagged.
If Unit 304 is genuinely missing, I’ve been told I would need to complete 2365 Level 2 and Level 3 just to get back to where I currently am and that's before even doing the NVQ and AM2. Obviously, I take responsibility for not sorting this properly five years ago, but I’m now trying to work out the most sensible way forward.
Has anyone been in a similar position, or does anyone know what steps I should take to salvage as much as possible in terms of time and money?
In particular, I’d really appreciate advice on:
Whether missing Unit 304 sounds like an admin/record issue?
Whether my old college or City & Guilds should be able to provide a full unit breakdown/transcript?
Whether there’s any route to complete the missing unit without restarting 2365 Level 2 and 3?
Whether an EWA is still realistic in this situation or if I essentially need to start again?
Any advice would be massively appreciated. Thanks
