Infected anal glands in dog what to do ?
I have been taking my almost 12 year old gsp to the vet for about 4 months due to anal gland issues. It started with them leaking. He was put on an antibiotic for two rounds. Then a stronger antibiotic for one round. I was advised to use carprofen for inflammation. He continued to have very full glands every time they checked , so they infused them. He has had them infused 3 times now. Today he had a re check from 3 weeks ago. They said he wasn’t too full , but the color is still green and not the right consistency. Vet came out and asked me if he shows any sign of discomfort. He never scoots or licks at it. She gave 3 options. Leave it alone and see if he shows signs , culture the fluid to find what antibiotic is needed , or surgery to remove.
He doesn’t lick or scoot. How would I know if it’s bothering him and he isn’t scooting or licking ? He goes once a month for a Librella injection. Would it just be reasonable to have the glands checked when I have the injection from now on rather than surgery or anything else ?
