Orchids on Banyan Tree study

Orchids on Banyan Tree study

I’ve been experimenting with water control, and I wanted to practicing with a technique I got from a Reham Ali workshop. The subject is from I photo I took on a walk. I’ll definitely return to this subject; I need to put some practice into capturing the shape of orchids. It’s a mix of Daniel Smith and Holbein watercolors on Baohong rough.

Photo captured from my cab on the way to work. There’s a lot I’m not happy with in this piece, but I wanted to post something for Urban Sketchers week. One thing I think went well was dealing with the tree foliage. I also used Nickel Azo as the yellow for the light, which gave me the effect and feel I want. The values seem off, even with having done a value sketch first, and where does the large tree trunk disappear to? Also, using the Paynes Gray on the foreground trunk didn’t work out how I wanted. Maybe just going with thicker paint on the umber would have been better? Finally, I think the people, buckets, tables and e-bike should be less detailed, suggested more.

I might try it again.
