Book recommendations featuring "Force of Nature" protagonists with deep identity issues? (No SA or "Dark Romance" tropes)
Hi everyone, I’m looking for recommendations featuring complex, morally questionable protagonists who feel like a 'force of nature.' I’m specifically looking for characters with deep identity issues and a strong sense of agency, I love it when a character is willing to cross serious moral lines for their goals, leaving me in a genuine dilemma where I can understand their psyche without necessarily justifying their actions.
I want to be clear that I’m not looking for the 'Heathcliff' type of character. I’m not interested in the "I’m a horrible person and everyone must pay for it" type of narcissistic revenge; I find frustrating than compelling. I prefer revenge plots that feel more like Butcher’s (the boys)gritty, purposeful, and often directed at a system or a specific threat.
Furthermore, I have a zero-tolerance policy for sexual assault tropes or the toxic "abusive-but-misunderstood" leads often found in dark romance. I am looking for intellectual, philosophical, and psychological darkness rather than predatory behavior. I love characters who are brilliant, strategic, and damaged but still highly competent, especially when the plot focuses on their internal struggle and the weight of their choices. I’m open to Classics, Fantasy, or Contemporary Noir. Who are the characters that made you think the most because of their sheer will and complex moral compass?
