Why are coworkers rude when they find out you are homeless?

While this isn’t my situation (currently unemployed) I have heard from multiple people that coworkers, or even managers, can become very rude and mean once they find out someone is homeless. If someone is actually doing the right thing by getting a job, why would anyone look down on someone who is trying to do the right thing? Yes, I understand that some people suck, and are just insufferable jerks. But besides that, why? Me personally I don’t fault anyone who is doing everything they can to make it.
