Like the title says, I (32m) am an unofficial caregiver to my girlfriend (43f).
She was in the Air Force, and worked with aircraft, which exposed her to JP8. Due to this exposure, she has developed Chronic Auditory Processing Disorder, or CAPD, which has greatly affected her ability to perform almost any jobs in a noisy environment, let alone perform in her career as a researcher.
She also has been diagnosed with other issues, among them Military Sexual Trauma, PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, and ADHD.
She has already switched roles from a charge nurse to medical researcher, due to her disabilities sustained.
She has been capable of achieving a lot in her career, but with recent developments regarding CAPD, her work isn’t providing adequate accommodations, and she is often frustrated, stressed, and crying due to the disorder.
I believe that what would be most helpful, would be to have her focus on recovery and treatment, and be her caregiver, while she collects benefits, and I am given compensation to help her. This money would keep our roof over our heads. I will try to continue to work part time when possible, if possible.
Although this is likely considered a mental disability, it clearly affects her in a physical way. What are my next steps?
