Where Do Miners Stand on the BIP-110 Controversy?

One thing I've found interesting about the recent BIP-110 controversy is how much discussion it's sparked around miner influence and network governance.

Some people argue miners should simply follow economic consensus. Others think miners have a responsibility to influence the direction of the network through the chain they choose to support.

As a miner, has this whole situation changed how you think about your role in Bitcoin?

Do miners just secure the network, or do they have a bigger responsibility when contentious proposals come up?

Curious to hear thoughts from people actually running hashpower.

Bitcoin mining is probably one of the most misunderstood parts of Bitcoin

I still see people talk about mining like it's just plugging in a bunch of computers, burning electricity, and getting free Bitcoin. In reality, it's an extremely competitive business where your electricity rate, hardware efficiency, uptime, Bitcoin's price, network difficulty, and even how you manage your machines can make the difference between making money and losing money.

And something I think gets overlooked all the time is that Bitcoin going up doesn't automatically mean miners are suddenly making a fortune. If Bitcoin doubled tomorrow, mining would become more attractive, more machines would come online, competition would increase, and difficulty would eventually adjust. The miners with the cheapest power and most efficient hardware would have the best chance of surviving.

That's what makes mining so interesting to me. You're constantly competing against everyone else on the network, and the economics can change pretty quickly.

I've been around Bitcoin mining for a while now, and I honestly think most people have no idea how competitive it actually is.

For the miners in here, what's the biggest thing you think people misunderstand about Bitcoin mining?

What mining hardware are people actually looking for right now?

With Bitcoin mining economics constantly changing, I'm curious what hardware miners are actually looking at right now.

Between ASIC efficiency improvements, hardware prices coming down from previous cycles, and different electricity rates affecting ROI, what miners make sense to people today?

Are you currently looking at:

  • Newer efficient machines like S21 series units?
  • Used ASICs because of lower upfront cost?
  • Lower power miners for home setups?
  • Higher efficiency machines for long-term operation?

For those actively mining, what is the biggest factor when choosing your next ASIC right now?

Is it:

  • $/TH efficiency
  • Purchase price
  • Power consumption
  • Reliability
  • Resale value

Would be interested to hear what hardware people are actually running, planning to buy, or waiting for in the current market.

How many people here were actually affected by the recent COLDCARD security incident?

The recent COLDCARD security issue has been one of the bigger hardware wallet discussions in the Bitcoin community recently.

For those who may have missed it, the incident involved vulnerabilities around encrypted seed backups. In certain cases, attackers were able to obtain information that could potentially be used to compromise wallets. Since then, some users have reported stolen funds, while others have taken precautions by moving their Bitcoin and reviewing their backup setups.

One thing that has been difficult to understand is the actual scale of the impact. There has been a lot of discussion online, but not as much information from people who were directly affected.

I’m curious to hear from the community:

  • Did you personally use a COLDCARD setup that was affected?
  • Did you have to move your funds because of this incident?
  • Did this change how you handle seed backups or self-custody?
  • For those unaffected, did this change your view on hardware wallets?

The goal here is not to spread fear around self-custody or hardware wallets. Incidents like this are also an opportunity to learn more about best practices and how Bitcoiners can better protect their funds.

Would be interested to hear any firsthand experiences from those who were affected or took action because of this.
