A Quick history lesson || pride Month 🏳️🌈
I was originally going to post this yesterday but the sub was in a meltdown and i missed my chance to post
A frequently asked question by straight people is "Why is it necessary to celebrate an entire month for the LGBTQIA++ community" and this is why
Pride Month is celebrated in the month of June as a way of paying homage to the lives lost during the 1969 stonewall riots in new york
The entire month of celebration began as a battle of survival for the queers in the the 1960s
Living as an openly queer person was practically a death sentence, homosexuality was a crime , police raids on gay bars were common and were often really violent
On june 28 , 1969 the police raided the stone wall inn , but this time people were finally done with the violence they hit up the streets and began to protest
Moreover this movement was largely led by people of colour and as it became harder for the police to control them, they decided to retreat
The stonewall movement is considered as one of the pioneers of the movement as it pulled together scattered groups and turned this into a larger political movement
Pride Month exists because queer people were finally tired of the oppression they went through purely because society refused to look at them as humans and it needs to be celebrated every year because queer people are still repressed in parts of the world even in India
Pride is a celebration even Allies are welcomed and can join
The first people to loose their rights are always the minority and it is essential that awareness is constantly raised to make the world a better place for everyone
Happy pride Month 🏳️🌈♥️✨✨
