Why didn’t Phil Alden Robinson’s directing career take off after Field of Dreams and Sneakers?
Phil Alden Robinson had such a weird director filmography:
1987 - In The Mood (flop)
1989 - Field of Dreams ($85m on a $15m budget)
1992 - Sneakers ($105m on a $23m budget)
** at this point Robinson should have been a bankable director, yet he doesn’t direct another theatrical film until… **
2002 - The Sum of All Fears ($194m on a $68m budget)
** still seems bankable, and yet he doesn’t direct again until… **
2014 - The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (flop)
And he’s done.
Field of Dreams and Sneakers were box office and critical hits. The Sum of All Fears was... fine. Why didn’t Robinson get more directing work?
