Transitioning from Academia to Industry – Seeking Advice (9 Years Research Experience)
Hi all,
I’m looking for advice as I make my way into industry and would love to hear from people who’ve made a similar transition.
Background:
I have a BS, MSc, PhD in epidemiology and nine years of research experience, including two postdocs across three different countries. My expertise is in real-world evidence (RWE) using EHR, claims data, national registries, and biobank data — with experience working on datasets of 50M+ individuals. My skill set includes:
• Causal inference
• National-level estimation
• Access/discontinuation of treatment
• Patient-reported outcomes and biomarkers (biobank)
• Advanced statistical analysis, programming, and high-performance computing
I have 10+ first-author publications, including some in high-impact journals, and have received awards for best papers. I also speak four languages (not sure how relevant that is here).
My Questions:
What level should I be targeting — Associate Director or Principal Scientist? Not familiar with this.
With my experience, I’m wondering which level makes the most sense. When I read job descriptions, my profile seems to fit both, but I’ve seen some posts suggesting Principal Scientist can’t be an entry-level role in industry. Is that accurate? What’s the typical hierarchy? How long does the recruitment process take?
I want to plan my timeline realistically. Also — is it generally acceptable to negotiate a start date (e.g., asking for 2 months out even if you could start sooner)?Startups vs. Big Pharma for a first industry role — what do you recommend?
I’m open to both but would love to hear pros/cons from people who’ve been through it.
Thanks in advance!
