College is withholding my final sem results and TC over a Student Union fund deficit. Forced me to sign an undertaking. Is this legal?
Hey everyone, looking for some urgent legal perspective on a messy situation with my college administration.
I just finished my final semester exams. However, my college management has completely blocked my 6th-semester results, final marksheet, and my Transfer Certificate (TC).
The Background:
During the academic year, I held an elected student leadership position (Student Secretary) in the College Union Society. Our tenure involved managing student bodies and organizing college events.
Before the final end-of-semester exams, the management claimed there was an financial deficit in the Union Society fund. To force us to take personal responsibility for this collective organizational deficit, they held my exam hall ticket hostage.
With our academic year and graduation on the line right before exams, we had no choice but to give in. They forcefully made us sign an undertaking stating that I would personally clear the deficit caused during our tenure.
The Current Situation:
Now that exams are over, they are refusing to publish our 6th-semester results or hand over our TC until we pay up.
My questions are:
Is this even remotely legal? Can an institution link an extracurricular student union fund dispute to an individual's personal academic documents and degrees?
Does the undertaking hold any value? Since it was extracted under clear duress (withholding my hall ticket right before finals), is it legally binding?
What is the fastest way to handle this? I need my TC and results immediately to secure my next academic steps/admissions, and I cannot let them stall my career over an administrative budget issue.
