I had many of these same questions as a fresher... happy to help where I can

Hey everyone,

After joining this community recently, I have been seeing a lot of posts from freshers asking questions about Chandigarh University.

Questions about academics, placements, coding culture, internships, campus life, clubs, hostels, PGs, flats, roommates, making friends, networking, and generally what to expect after joining.

Honestly, seeing those posts reminded me of when I first joined.

I remember how confusing everything felt in the beginning.

You hear different things from different people.

One person tells you academics are very difficult.

Another tells you academics do not matter at all.

Someone says you should focus only on coding.

Someone else says you should focus on networking, clubs, or building projects.

Everybody seems to have their own opinion, and as a fresher it becomes difficult to understand what is actually important and what is not.

Then there are all the practical questions:

How much should I expect to spend?

How is campus life really?

How do clubs and events work?

How can I meet new people and build a good network?

What should I focus on during my first year?

What mistakes should I avoid?

Should I stay in a hostel, PG, or flat?

And perhaps the biggest question of all:

How do I make the most of my college years without realizing later that I spent too much time focusing on the wrong things?

I had many of these same questions when I joined.

Most students do.

The problem is that when you are new, you do not always know who to ask.

Sometimes you get ten different answers to the same question.

Sometimes you do not even know where to begin.

I am about to enter my third year in CSE at CU, and after seeing so many similar posts here, I thought I would reach out and offer help to anyone going through that same phase right now.

I definitely do not have answers to everything.

There are still many things I am learning myself.

But if you have questions about academics, placements, internships, coding, student life, accommodation, campus, opportunities, or simply want another student's perspective on something, feel free to reach out.

And if I do not know the answer, I will try my best to connect you with someone who does.

I know how valuable even a little guidance can feel when you are joining a completely new place and trying to figure everything out on your own.

So if you are a fresher or junior and need help with anything, feel free to send me a message.

Feel free to DM. Happy to help whenever I can.

The hardest part of college isn't academics

It's funny how nobody really prepares you for the parts of college that happen outside the classroom.

Before joining, I thought the difficult part would be assignments, exams, attendance, and keeping up with academics.

Instead, I spent a surprising amount of time solving completely different problems.

Finding a room.

Finding someone to share that room with.

Figuring out which areas students usually stayed in and which ones they avoided.

Then came a different set of problems.

Needing something for a few days and realizing buying it makes no sense.

Maybe it's a calculator.

Maybe it's a cycle.

Maybe it's something for a project.

Maybe it's a webcam for an interview.

Maybe it's something you'll use once and never touch again.

At the same time, there's probably another student nearby who already has that exact thing sitting unused.

Then there are the questions.

The oddly specific questions that Google doesn't really answer.

How much rent is reasonable?

Which area is safe?

Where do students usually stay?

Who do I even ask?

The answer usually exists somewhere — a WhatsApp group, a senior's contact, an old Reddit post, an Instagram page, a Telegram channel.

Just never in one place.

The more students I spoke to, the more I realized most student problems aren't unique.

Someone is looking for a room.

Someone has a vacant room.

Someone needs something.

Someone else already owns it.

Someone has a question.

Someone else knows the answer.

The solutions often exist.

They're just scattered.

That's one of the reasons a friend and I started building StudentPlace.

Not because we thought students needed another social platform.

But because student life itself feels scattered.

Rooms in one place.

Buying and selling in another.

Borrowing and lending somewhere else.

Questions somewhere else.

Support somewhere else.

StudentPlace is our attempt to bring those everyday parts of student life a little closer together.

We're still early, still learning, and still improving every week.

If you're joining college this year:

What's the one thing you're most worried about, confused about, or trying to figure out right now?

And if you're already in college:

What's one thing you wish had been easier when you first joined?

Student Place

Hi, hope you all are doing well!

Wanted to share something that might be useful for you as a student.

A few of us from CU have been building a student-focused platform called StudentPlace. It's built around the things students actually go through — stress, loneliness, needing someone to talk to, and just navigating campus life.

Here's what you can do on it:

• Post how you're feeling — anonymously or with your name — across 16 different moods

• Vent without any judgment, fully anonymous, gone in 24 hours

• Talk to an AI companion in Hindi or English, anytime you need

• Create groups based on your college or interests and chat in real time

• Create and browse marketplace listings — sell or buy second-hand books, electronics, and more with verified students

• Create room listings or find flatmates / roommates near your campus

• Discover cafes, food spots, and study places near you

We are still in the early stages — things are being built and improved every day. But the core is already there and working, and we would love for more students to try it out and tell us what's missing.

Here's the link:

If you do check it out, your feedback would genuinely mean a lot to us.

No pressure at all — just thought it might be helpful 🙂
