I've been on Visanne for 10 years (since my laparoscopy at age 29, stage 4 endo) and never had a breakthrough period except a mild one once or twice when I had certain other medications. In the last 2 months, I've had 2 heavy and very painful periods, as well as facial eczema that doesn't respond to topical treatments. I saw my gynae and she said my only option was an IUD. She ruled out perimenopause. My gut and extensive research tells me my hormones have naturally adjusted (e.g. from perimenopause) or from becoming resistant to progestin. The IUD she's recommending has an extremely low rate of amennorhea, and is also very very expensive. I'm terrified of going through the pain and cost of getting it, only to find I get a regular period again.

Has anyone had a similar experience of their progestin-only pill just stopping working? Is there really no other option I could try, like taking a break from the pill, switching to a generic or a different pill, or changing the dosage?
