Barbara Lee's comment is a disgrace and a disservice to Oakland residents

Oaklandside's piece about Oakland's Charter Reform proposal is a perfect example of the issues that hold Oakland back.

Rather than debate the issue, Mayor Lee immediately pulls out the "Race Card" to shut down criticism with, “There’s a long history in this country of describing Black leaders — particularly Black women leaders seeking executive authority or structural reform — as dangerous or unqualified.”

If this were true you would never have served in Congress, Mayor Lee. Oakland needs professional, day to day city management to address Encampments, Trash Dumping, Flagrant Traffic Violations, Road Maintenance and Repair, and a host of other issues, not a politician with no real experience leading a city of almost half a million people and thousands of employees.

Nice try, but no.

Oaklandside regularly makes the case for a Professional City Manager.

Latest: Oakland’s illegal dumping strategy isn’t working. A new report explains why

Mayor too busy with reelection, OPD too busy to assign any resources for a year, City Attorney too busy so it "fell between the cracks," City Hall Bureaucracy too busy to collect the money, Oakland pays higher Waste Management rates than neighbors, 71 dumpsters unused for neighborhood cleanup, City Council says "not my job," etc, etc.

Mayor Lee: explain how you are going to stay on top of this when there are so many examples across the bureaucracy.

Oakland needs a Professional City Manager now.
