Odd gloss issue keeps recurring on a Roland UV printer
We have a Roland LEF2-300 in the shop, and we use it to print a lot of texture and gloss on clear materials.
What's happening is that when printing texture and then gloss finish over that texture, we are getting visible faint lines that I think is showing through from the first prep pass that the printer is doing before the final gloss finish. There isn't really drop out showing on print tests, and matte printing looked normal, gloss seems to be where the issue is really manifesting.
I first experienced this on a nearly two year old print head back in December 2025. I figured the head was just old, so I had a service tech replace it, and the problem went away.
2 months later, the replaced head starts doing it. I got the tech out again, we did extensive testing, found no problems or any issued with the head on usual print tests, but on a texture test with a gloss overlay, it was there, every time.
We replaced the head, re-ran that texture > gloss test, and it was fixed. What seemed apparent at that time, was that the gloss head seemed to be just outputting way less volume of gloss with that print head.
This seemed to be what the issue was. That the head was just outputting less volume of ink in general.
It has been about 6 weeks, and this third head just started doing the exact same thing as the previous two, and I'm at a loss to explain why this keeps happening.
Have any of you experienced something like this? Any idea what the issue might be?
