Is Civil Service grade progression always worth chasing if the salary attached to the grade is not actually better?

In some DDaT and specialist analytical roles, lower grades can receive allowances or market supplements that make the total salary comparable to, or even higher than, roles at the next grade up.

This makes me wonder whether grade alone is sometimes a misleading signal. A move to a higher grade may bring more responsibility, more pressure and better long-term status, but not necessarily better total reward , especially if the move means losing a specialist allowance.

For people in DDaT, data, analytical or other specialist Civil Service roles:

Would you prioritise formal grade progression, or total reward and role quality?

Have others seen cases where a lower-grade specialist role was financially better than a standard role at the next grade up?
