Moscow Chernobyl Lore
As a student in 2001 I lived in Moscow with a Russian host family. My host mother who in her 70s had a couple of Chernobyl stories she would tell. First, you were never supposed to buy produce from the market outside of Kievsky Railroad Station as it was all irradiated. She and all her friends believed this even in 2001. Second, according to her, shortly after Chernobyl the authorities closed Belorussky Metro Station. There was a famous statue at the top of the escalator inside the Metro, the hand of which had a 6th finger due to a casting mistake. After the accident the authorities couldn’t tolerate this and they closed the station early and removed the extra finger.
