Do most accountants actually enjoy their jobs, or just tolerate them?

I’ve been spending a lot of time reading posts in this sub lately, and I genuinely can’t tell if accounting is a solid long-term career or just something people stay in because it’s stable.

On one hand, people talk about:

  • good job security
  • decent pay progression
  • remote opportunities
  • stable career path

But on the other hand, I constantly see:

  • burnout stories
  • busy season nightmares
  • people wanting to leave public accounting ASAP
  • comments saying they regret choosing accounting

So now I’m curious:

For people already working in accounting:

  • Are you actually happy with your career overall?
  • Does it get better after the first few years?
  • What area of accounting has the best balance between money and sanity?
  • If you could go back, would you still choose accounting?

Would love honest answers instead of sugarcoated LinkedIn-style advice lol
