Pupil who invented device to help homeless named 'girl of the year' and she deserves it.
Rebecca Young, a Scottish student from Kelvinside Academy in Glasgow, designed a life-saving, solar-powered heated blanket built into a portable backpack to help homeless individuals survive freezing winters. The device functions as a blanket that integrates into a wearable backpack, using flexible solar panels to collect energy during daylight hours and store it in a compact, lightweight battery pack. Copper wires embedded in the fabric release up to eight hours of warmth at night, using a smart circuit to safely regulate temperature within a waterproof, durable, and flame-retardant material. The concept won the UK Primary Engineer competition out of 70,000 entries and earned Rebecca a spot on Time Magazine's list of "Girls of the Year".
