About the event:

Communities around the world are navigating an increasingly complex set of challenges: the impacts of climate change, the lack of affordable housing, rising living costs, growing loneliness, and declining trust in government. These are not isolated issues; they form a polycrisis with serious consequences for mental health, particularly among young people.

So what is the role of research in this context? And what should research look like when trying to create meaningful change within complex, dynamic systems?

Dr. Manuel Riemer from Wilfrid Laurier University, will draw on three research programs at the intersection of psychology, environment, and social justice, grounded in community psychology principles, to explore these topics:

🔹 Supporting local governments in adapting to the complexity of the polycrisis

🔹 Developing cultures of sustainability in organisations, including a net-positive energy office building and schools

🔹 Enabling community-led climate resilience

He will also reflect on how this type of research evolves into a more systemically oriented approach and the challenges that come with it. Following the presentation, an open discussion will take place with Dr. Riemer and three panellists from the University of Twente:

— Prof. Justine Blanford

— Dr. Diana Reckien

— Dr. Michel Bourban
