It's now the NSF's turn
A couple of months ago, the Department of Energy started the Genesis project, which is essentially a money grab by the tech companies to take money out of basic science and put it into AI. Now the NSF is following suite ( https://www.nsf.gov/news/nsf-announces-15b-nsf-x-labs-initiative-pursue-generational ) and taking money for basic science to give to the very same companies.
This does mean that basic research in the US is essentially done, unless a change in Congress allows them to reign in the agencies.
