Gameoverse is a good pilot and a poor episode one.
Made this as a comment, but decided to elaborate in a post. TL;DR at bottom
One thing I like to do is watch pilots for TV series that canceled or got aired. It’s just a fun thing to see the roots for stuff like Adventure Time (Finn’s name used to be Pen), Over the Garden Wall, and Flapjack’s pilot.
It’s so interesting to see something that is supposed to cater not to kids, but to business executives. They aren’t art pieces, but sales pitches. The key commonality between all of these pilots is that they aren’t the final product and that’s okay. They won’t be the first episode in a series that isn’t even written yet nor will the flaws of some character bleed over without correction.
This brings me to my thesis: Glitch Productions needs to stop making their pilots be the first episode.
A third party example would be Hazbin Hotel. Their pilot is extremely good. The premise is unique, the characters are easy to understand and likable, and it leads you wanting more. Those are the three things a pilot should do! It rushed the entire time, but that’s just the nature of a pilot. If only Vivzie made a new episode one. It was pretty confusing watching season one realizing the pilot was the actual first episode.
Glitch followed in their footsteps for better or worse.
The only exception would be TADC as that was already in production and less of a pilot and more of an actual episode one.
Gaslight District is a good pilot episode with its rushed pacing, character introductions, and trying to get you hooked right off the back. I just hope they make a proper episode one because the pacing is really bad if it’ll be a part of the series.
Onto the actual star of this rant: Gameoverse.
Honestly? The bastard Ross got me hooked. It crammed in two character arcs, a backstory, a whole mission, and introduced the entire premise in just half an hour. I have more questions and I want more. And believe it or not, nudity is not uncommon in pilots of adult series. I do agree with the same body type argument though. (My one gripe is the title screen was immersion breaking. I know, it’s silly)
Great pilot!
If it’s the actual episode one? Utter garbage.
Kit’s arc is way too fast along with the learnasauros. The exposition is too heavy handed and they gave out too much information for one episode. They need to slow down and write out the characters a bit more so we get to know them better.
I’ll be praying that they keep this as the sales pitch it should be and not the art piece they have been striving years for.
TL;DR pilots are sales pitches and episode ones are art. Combining the two leads to a disjointed mess and drags the rest of the show down. Glitch Productions needs to separate the two.
