Missing In West Virginia: What happened to Marsha "Mudd" Ferber owner and operator of The Underground Railroad and the liberal hippie, "outlaw" in 1988?
Marsha sounds like she was the topic of a lot of conversations for many years specifically in Morgantown West Virginia. It seems Marsha was surrounded by friends and people that she loved and it seemed they loved her back by all descriptions of her life leading up to her vanishing. Though no direct "enemies " were out and out mentioned the fate of Marsha Ferber is still unknown.
Marsha moved from New Jersey with her family and another couple to start the Mudd Farm Commune in Calhoun County West Virginia in the 70's and then moved to Morgantown. Marsha was a mother of two children. She founded The Underground Railroad in 1982.
This establishment was said to greatly reflect her liberal, political views and her taste in music. The Underground Railroad is described as a bar and music venue. It was said to promote equality and the 80's were apparently Marsha's hay day and she was described as an entrepreneur who hated capitalism. She also mentored teens at "The Dry House" and owned 2 music venues. The younger generation called her "Ma." She also used The Underground Railroad to hide and relocate victims of domestic violence.
Marsha was a smoker and possibly seller of Marijuana at the time of her disappearance and some say maybe even in the distribution of cocaine at that time, according to one of her friends.
There are two different dates given throughout articles for the day Marsha was actually last seen. Some sources say it was April 25th 1988, others say April 28th 1988, but it still seems somewhere in the passing of time and information the windows of her actual disappearance may be a few days wide. It was unclear to me if she was in any romantic relationships at the time of her disappearance.
The details all seem to point to being that on the night she was last seen at the nightclub she had left to run some errands. She left behind her car, her keys, her purse and wallet Also leaving behind 32,000 in cash and "a half a loaf of hash" in the safe. Marsha never returned from running those errands and has never been seen again. Marsha was 47 years old at the time of her disappearance.
No one close to Marsha believes she vanished of her own accord. She would not have willingly left her children and family or her businesses behind. Some rumors seemed to speculate she was running from something and or went to Florida or Jamaica. These claims have never panned out or been proven as anything more than rumor or speculation.
In 1988 Marsha was living a very colorful life. It seems she had a wide range of things going on and no shortage of her leaving her mark on the world. But then like that she has vanished and many years have gone by with no answers for her loved ones.
Was it the drug connection that caused her to come to harm? Did she vanish willingly and decide to leave it all behind? Was she targeted for some reason?
There really is such vague detail about any investigation that transpired in 1988. It sounds like Marsha was a small town "celebrity ", did this cause someone to focus on her? Perhaps someone with different political views.
I hope someday, somehow, Marsha's loved ones get answers to all the questions that time has built up. What happened to Marsha Ferber in Morgantown West Virginia in 1988?
