Gnome extensions

Gnome is slowly but surely growing on me. I got KDE Plasma on my main laptop, but have been testing gnome on a VM on my main Desktop. And now I‘ve just installed Workstation on an old laptop to test it on bare metal (for the gestures on the trackpad). Yeah, I like it, but I‘ll definetely need a few extensions like dash t dock, blur my shell and one or two more.

How likely is it that they break, and more importantly, how quickly are they fixed when a new Gnome version is released? Ir they‘re fixed in a week or two, then that would no problem for me, as I‘d simply wait with upgrading gnome.

TY for your insights.

GeForce GTX 1080 - still supported in mint?

I’m frankensteining a pc to replace my ageing htpc. Does the Geforce GTX 1080 still work on mint 22.3, ie are the legacy drivers 580 still available in the driver manager?

Fedora is sublime

You cannot imagine how happy I am. Got meself a Thinkpad T14 Gen 1 AMD 4650u as an early birthday present.

After botching a first fedora install on this machine (don't ask...), I installed LM 22.3 on it. It was nice, but two things were lacking: Proper scaling support (my eyes aren´t the best anymore to 1080p at 100%...) and better (out of the box) battery management.

So I made a backup of the mint install to an external HDD (I love foxclone) and installed Fedora 44 KDE. Again.

And it works. Like a charm. Love the power management and battery functions. Scaling works properly. And Fedora is rock solid on this machine. (And also thanks to snapper, I can tinker around with the device without worrying about nuking my system.) I love how everything basically just... works.

I'm really eager to get to know this distro better, I even started the Linux Foundation free "Introduction to Linux" online course. To really do my "homerwork" during the course (getting to know and how to use bash), I installed VirtualBox and installed Fedora 44 *workstation* on the T14. (Yo dawg I heard you like Linux so we put some Linux into your Linux!)

So I also get to know Fedora Workstation a little bit better, and getting used to it's minimalistic approach. (I installed "Dash to Dock" already in the VM - can´t live without my dock anymore, it's become essential for me).

Looking forward to tomorrow: I'll upgrade the T14 a bit with an 16GB 3200MHz RAM bar, and it also get´s a brand new battery. The old one is at 59%, time to replace it.

Batterylife is somewhat acceptable, I get around 5ish hours of Batterylife with the "balanced" powerprofile. From a previous install with a different distro, the battery controller is set to thresholds 40% (start charging) and 80% (stop charging).

Now, when the battery reaches around 35% to 40%, it suddenly drops to around 5 to 6%.

Battery Diagnostics (F10 when startup) attested that the battery is in good condition, although it got a hefty amount of load cycles (762). Max capacity is still shown at 50Wh (which I find strange, actually - after so many cycles?)

Anyway, as the laptop doesn't immediately shut down after dropping to around 5 to 6% from the mentioned 35 to 40%, I think it might be a calibration issue. I'm currently trying to recalibrate it (temporarily set charging thresholds so it charges up to 100%) and see what happens.

Any other ideas what's going on and what I could do?

And what to do to improve battery life? I'm on Mint Cinnamon 22.3, so I'm a bit wary of installing TLP.

Thanks in advance.
