Bagua and Taiji

Thought I'd share a bit from a recent tournament. Yes plenty of mistakes in there, I know where they're at and what to work on. Honestly the best part of going to tournaments other than meeting new friends is testing myself, learning, and growing. Lots of great people to push hands with feel different energies from. I get nervous every time I put myself out there in front of others so I make way more mistakes than I do when training at my school. Forcing myself to compete pushes myself into those uncomfortable spaces so that I can grow through them and overcome the mental aspects that can hold me back. Pressure testing is the only way to grow and develop, everything else is theoretical. Its not about placing, its about growing.

What are your thoughts on shoes? Favorite types?

So this is a big one. Im sure that for many of you, like me, its been a constant search for good kung fu shoes. I tried indoor soccer shoes for a time, but they run too narrow for my wide feet. Of course there are Feiyues, but they fall apart fairly quickly and are a bit too sticky for my liking. My shifu recommended some wushu style shoes that I really liked, but the quality has gone way downhill and the last pair I bought were garbage. I know there are the slipper type, but those are cheap and horrible as well with no ankle support. I recently tried out Xero barefoot shoes, which have good durability, but too much grip and too much room for my foot to move around in the toe box (they are designed this way to let the toes spread out). Training on wood floors i can get away with stickier shoes, but when I go to tournamnets they're usually on carpet and it messes me up because they are like velcro. I had some students recommended Astrals and Vivos that im thinking of trying out. I need something flat and lightweight for a wider foot that I can destroy and gives the right balance between slide and grip. Personally I like the color black and dont care for leather shoes. Im sure some people might mention masters in the past training in Penny loafers. I hear you, but there are a lot more and better options these days and I don't want to torture my feet.

Very Old Footage of Sun Zhijun

I've been able to track down some very old footage and writings from my grandmaster and have been given some of his writings by my master of the philosophy of Cheng Baguazhang that were not publicly shared. At some point I'll have time to put it all down in a book.

Bagua Judges Pens.

I recognize a lot of the movements from Sun Zhijun's Cheng Bagua, but the title of the video says it is Shao Zhongming. Found in a deep corner of the internet a while back.

Video demonstration

Ive noticed lately there has been someone very active on this feed putting others down and claiming to have the only real knowledge of Baguazhang, but I haven't yet seen any kind of demonstration of his ability...

I'm sure everyone here would love to be enlightened and see a demonstration of your movement. These days true masters aren't afraid to show their movement online for others to see.

To the others who have been bravely putting themselves out there, keep it up! Baguazhang is an extremely difficult style to learn and there is a lot of misinformation out there. The best way to get better is to ask for help, learn from others ahead of you on the path, and to keep a positive attitude.

Cheng Baguazhang Online Academy

I run a Baguazhang school in Asheville, NC and thought I'd share this in case any of you are interested in distance studies (or in person if you'd like to visit). My grandmaster is Sun Zhijun, and my master (Li Chunling) has taught me our whole system in great detail. I started creating instructional videos for my students to be able to better practice at home, which ended up growing into an entire Online Academy.

All the lessons are prerecorded so that students can progress at their own pace, and I'm always available for questions. I teach the 8 Turning Palms, 8 Mother Palms, 64 Palms, Broadsword, Moon Knives, Straight Sword, and Spear as well as combat application.

I also study Chen Taijiquan under master Chen Bing and have a ton of content for students to learn traditional Chen Taiji.

I don't hold students back, and I don't hold back in my teaching so I'll take you as far as you're willing to go. I've got more information on my website at https://www.dragonphoenix.org/online-academy

If you've got any questions feel free to reach out. I train and teach Internal Kung Fu full time for a living so this is my life and has been for the past dozen or so years. I know this material is very difficult to find in the US, and even more difficult to find from a competent teacher who can break it down. I also hold a master's degree in education so am very good at distilling complex concepts into simple pieces to make it easier for everyone to learn.
