Im currently planning a 3 week roadtrip with a campervan in Australia. We've done melbourne - sydney last time, loved it (especially Wilsons Prom!) and are lucky enough to be able to come back to Australia this November 2026.
I was initially eyeing Queensland for its tropical areas, as we love nature and wildlife. Then i figured driving south to brisbane/sydney would not align with our interests, and might be somewhat similar to what we did last time.
So as I was researching other options, I thought driving all the way to darwin would be interesting. I found some cool spots on the way. But then I read that november can be very humid, and more importantly: risk of floods.
We would not want to get stuck for a few days because of flooded routes.
So i have three questions:
Is cairns - darwin a fun drive with enough cool spots on the way for 2 people who mostly enjoy nature, hiking and wildlife?
Are floods really that big of a risk in November on this route?
What are other great options for us for 3 weeks in Australia? I was also considering 1-2 weeks tasmania + 1-2 weeks melbourne - adelaide for example.
