75 years of commercial computers - June 2026
Whilst enjoying the recent TWiR reported WIBY.ME search engine, this 2001 webpage from the BBC popped up, a page I remember reading over dial up on my Amiga - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/sci_tech/2000/dot_life/1394413.stm
It was celebrating the 50th anniversary of commercial computing. The first UNIVAC was sold to United States Census Bureau on 14th June 1951.
“I think there's a world market for maybe five computers
Thomas Watson, IBM chairman, 1943”
A sobering reminder that time is racing by at a seemingly accelerating pace!
