Setting Up - Any advice for a newbie?

So I recently been let go from a permanent job position I had for 4 and a half years, in that time I've become quite established in my skill. I've always been told that my previous job was like 'rocking horse shit' so I should never quit as most people in this film/tv industry have freelance or balance short term contracts. I'm about 5 and a half years into my career and have had 2 of these jobs before to build up my skills, so never been on my own like this before.

So I need to set up as freelance, I've managed to bag 2 short term gigs in the 5 days since my contract was ended so I should be okay until mid to late September, and while I do this I'll be obviously promoting myself and looking for more work.

I just wondered if there's any tips or tricks? I've been saving invoices for items I've bought like a new laptop/monitor, etc. My old mentor has given me a day rate which companies have negotiate a little but I think is a good rate for me to start at.
