Identity theft and scam
Earlier today I had what I thought was one of my old friends message me via Instagram. They said they needed help logging back into their main account on their new phone with this new 2 people authentication. They asked for my number and I gave it to them even though I already had his number saved. They then started messaging me over phone number. No code got sent over so I’m thinking this is just an excuse to get someone’s number and potentially other information of theirs which might be how they got my friends. After a couple messages they had a strange request to be sent $150 and they would send me $170 back tomorrow morning. For the reason that they need to Zelle “their cousin” but Zelle isn’t working for them. So I ask for it to see if I can get more information on this person who I’m suspecting is not my friend. Which I confirmed by actually calling him and he said that was a fake account and to just report it. After I kept talking with the scam artist to try and gather more information on this individual I got their Cash App and a potential name. I already have their phone number which is linked to an area code in LA and we are in the Bay Area. He also provided me with his cousins number which is some south and west oklahoma area code. I want to report this to the police via non emergency line of course but I wanted to ask some hopefully professionals if anything will even be done about this. The person is following a large majority of people from our old high school and I’m sure is messaging them too with this same scam. I even have this third friend who I got on call with and said the person had previously messaged them but they told them they knew that they were some fake account.
If anyone needs any further information or any more details/ has any questions I’d like a bit of help on what to do and wether to file this or not because it will be forgotten and never progress.
