Unsuccessful Ventilations/Airway Obstruction
I am not a paramedic, just someone who recently took a first aid course in Ontario. I know the standards are different, but I was unclear on something technical I was taught, and wanted a better understanding from the professionals!
In this scenario, you have no equipment (no stethoscope for auscultation; no capnometry/capnography) except for a CPR pocket mask. If you were doing CPR on a patient who is VSA (no suspected respiratory arrest), and your first ventilation was unsuccessful (no chest rise), and your second ventilation was successful (chest rise), would you deliver a third ventilation or move on to compressions?
If both ventilations were unsuccessful and you moved on to compressions, after which you discovered an obstruction in the airway, how would you attempt to get it out (if you had no suction - or forceps if ACP)?
I understand this is a situation that wouldn’t ever occur in your professional capacity, but curious as a first aider! Thanks for taking the time to read this!
