South Sister, Middle Sister, and Broken Top from the Summit of Tumalo Mountain, Deschutes National Forest, Oregon

Here’s the view from my hike today (5/20/26). The Tumalo Mountain Trail is a moderate difficulty out-and-back hike, 4 miles round trip with about 1400 feet of elevation gain. So worth it! I love doing these types of hikes in the spring because the mountains look incredible when they’re still draped in snow.

1945 Willamette National Forest map with permit closures marked in red

This was a bit hard to photograph clearly because the print is so small. I picked it up on ebay for my collection of Oregon ephemera. I suspect this map is the sort of thing which would have been posted at ranger stations, informational kiosks, trailheads, and the like. It’s a cool piece showing many towns which no longer exist and other interesting features!
